Athy is situated on the River Barrow and is historically linked to St.
Brigid and the legendary Fionn Mac Cumhaill and The Fianna. Horse racing
at the Curragh Racecourse is home of the Irish Derby, with fixtures at
Naas and Punchestown which also hosts the Heineken International Three-day
Eventing Championship. Athy is easily reached from all the main routes,
the N7 by road and it is situated on the main Dublin-Waterford railway
line. The Fitzgeralds, Earls of Kildare were landlords in the town for many centuries.
We have coarse fishing on the Grand Canal and Barrow river, pitch and putt,
golf, swimming, tennis, squash and pony riding. The Moat of Ardscull is
an ancient prehistoric fortification. A plaque commemorates the Gordon
Bennet motor race held in Athy in 1903. Mondello Park hosts motor-racing - Motorcycle, karts, Cars and Rallycross. The Tourist Information Office
is at Market Square 059-8631859 which is open from July to August. Athy
Blue Grass Festival is held in July. Other events hosted in Athy include a traditional farmer's market every
Sunday and the Kildare County Show also takes place in July.
